April favourites

This post will be the last favourites post I write for a little while, and I must admit I am quite glad! When I had the idea of the all time favourite series it made so much sense! I love writing about the things I like the most, they are reasonably easy posts to write and I had a month worth of blog posts drafted within two hours. Bingo. However, as the month progressed, it all started feeling a little bit self indulgent. Who would care what my granny cooked me on a Saturday or what films have left an impression on me? On the flip side, it’s been nice to go through my memories and revisit some things that I’d really enjoyed in the past but no longer use, like Dr Hauschka products. I used to own so many of their products a few years ago and I slowly started experimenting with other things, but I've never found a body oil as good as theirs.

Whilst this month has been all about looking back in the blog, I’ve been looking forward in my life, making plans for the summer and making new habits. Since the year started I’ve been reducing the amount of things I consume and been having a good clearout (you may have read my blog post about my make up clearout). As a consequence my list of favourites this month is a little light, especially on  the beauty front. It has been a great month though, so I hope that you like it.

This month I’ve gone foundation free with the only exception of two weddings. Instead I have been using Origins Vitazing moisturiser. It releases a very light tint but doesn’t have any coverage. The only downside is that it doesn't cover my pigmentation at all, but then no foundation does, no matter how coverage. So, considering the result is similar, I'd rather not put make up on. I normally follow up with a bit of concealer under my eyes and that seems to be enough to make me look half presentable. A few people have said I looked well, which I am sure has something to do with having spent Easter in Valencia. Having said that, the sun didn’t shine much, so this little tube surely played its part.

REN Keep Young & Beautiful Serum

A few weeks ago I mentioned I really wanted to get REN’s radiance serum, which I had used before and really enjoy. However, when I went to order it I stumbled across this one.  It has Vitamin C, which is really good for evening out skin tone, something I always look for if possible.  Also, seeing as I am in my mid thirties, a little help on the anti-ageing front was never going to hurt, so I decided to give it a go. So far I have been very pleasantly surprised. I like that it has a pump instead of a pipette, as I always know how much to use and don’t waste product. The scent is very light and it makes your skin feel hydrated while working extremely well for combination skin.

Ripped jeans from Zara

I remember ripping my old jeans when I was a teenager back in the 90s. A few years ago I would have rolled my eyes if anyone had told me that I was going to be wearing ripped jeans again, but here I am! I work in an office where there is no dressing code. Seriously, you see people in suits and others in flip flops and nobody bats an eyelid, so I have no separation between my work and down time wardrobe. These jeans are probably one of the few things that I wouldn’t wear to the office, so apart from the fact that they are incredibly comfortable and that I like the look of them, they represent my free time. And that makes me love them even more.

New dress and shoes

When I was in Valencia I did a little bit of shopping, as two of my friends were getting married this month.

The first thing I bought while there was a dress from Bimba y Lola,  one of my favourite places to shop at when I'm home. It is like a Whistles with more daring prints and a bigger selection of accessories, especially handbags. The style of this dress is very simple and a bit modern, which is what I am always drawn to, and the cut was very flattering on my figure - a winner all around! It’s not too dressy or trendy, so I am sure I will get a lot of wear out of it in years to come.

The other purchase was these patent sandals from Yacare, one of my favourite shoe shops in Valencia. Their selection in store in insane, as is the quality of the shoes. Despite how tall these are they are deceptively comfortable. Having said that, I must confess that my feet did ache after a long day standing around and throwing embarrassing shapes in the dance floor.

Finally, one of the best things this month has been to go away. As I said before, I spent a week in Valencia during the Easter holidays, not doing much at all other than walk by the sea and seeing family. I really needed a bit of down time and although I have lived in cities most of my life, the outdoors has also been a big part of growing up, especially the seaside. A week there is like a health boost for me. I also had time to pay a visit to the butcher’s to bring back lots of ingredients for arroz al horno, which I talked about earlier this month.

Two weeks ago my friend Daisy got married in Manorbier, Pembrokeshire, a stunning part of the world. I had the chance to spend some quality time with friends I don't see anywhere near enough, and the setting couldn't have been more beautiful. We were staying in a house inside Manorbier Castle, a few minutes from the beach and with spectacular views. Another perk of being there is the lack of phone signal. I live permanently attached to my phone, so it was so freeing to leave it behind and not care about it.

And with that we reach the end of this month series. May will be a bit more fluid as far as subjects are concerned, although I have a few things I've been writing for a while that I am looking forward to sharing with you.

For those of you in the UK, have a fantastic Bank Holiday weekend!
